Critters in the Garden: the Beneficial Orb Weaver

I'm kinda writing this one with a heavy heart. I found a critter in my garden a few weeks back. It happens. It was an orb weaver. I had to use an app to identify her. When it presented the ID I was astonished by what I found. She's docile. She doesn't like confrontation. She would move when I worked in the area. I'd talk to her. She eats so many bugs. She ate aphids, grasshoppers...she was so cool. I named her Charlotte A Cavatica. I loved her. I'd talk to her. Now she's gone. Great pest control. I hope she had babies. If she did we won't see them until spring. I'll keep an eye out for them.

Happy gardening.

UPDATE: As of September 24 a second orb weaver in its web was spotted about 25 feet away from the first website location. I plan to check it tomorrow to see if it might be the same orb weaver. They can move their web if needed. Regardless, I'm super excited to have one!
