So you've decided that you want to grow a garden, or you're just starting to consider growing a garden. But where do you start? First, start by making observations about your yard. Is it level? Is it sloped? How much light does it get throughout the day? This observation won't happen overnight. Take your time. You can even make this observation over the course of several months AFTER you start gardening. It's not a one and done thing!
Also consider the plants that you will be growing. Different plants will have different needs. For instance, you wouldn't put a hosta and a succulent in an area where you'd put your corn or tomatoes. They have different light and water requirements. And if you are planting in ground, it's a good idea to get your soil tested. It can help determine what you need to do to amend your soil before you plant. This can be done by submitting soil samples to your county extension service, or you can also use a soil test from a garden center or big box store.
You also need to determine what you are growing in...raised beds, in the ground, hydroponic systems, et cetera. I grow in the ground, in raised beds, a small hydroponic system, and in containers and i even start some of my own seeds. I will cover that in a later post. Until then, happy gardening!
